Kathmandu, 7 November,  Malaysia has suspended the quota for new foreign workers. Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the Home Ministry (KDN) has suspended the new foreign worker quota.

According to the Malaysian media Malay Mail, the Economy Ministry has set a limit of 2.5 million foreign workers until December. Home Minister Ismail said that there are currently 2.4 million registered foreign workers in Malaysia. The Home Ministry clarified that since there is only a quota of 90,000 foreign workers remaining, no new workers will be taken. Malaysia has suspended the issuance of new quotas since last September.

According to Home Minister Ismail, the ministry has not taken any new applications since September and is preparing for a quarterly review to reassess the demand, especially in the sectors of agriculture, plantation, construction, and services. However, among the five sectors, the agriculture and plantation sectors are still experiencing a shortage of workers, Home Minister Ismail said.

Agriculture Minister Johari Abdul Ghani had previously requested a reconsideration for the need for foreign workers in these sectors. He said that the Home Ministry and the Human Resources Ministry are positive about this matter. The Malaysian government is prepared to provide the additional 90,000 foreign workers needed, especially in the palm oil and rubber industries. However, Nepalese workers are not particularly involved in these sectors. Therefore, Malaysia’s new demand will not be a priority for Nepal.
